How Much Does a Sitter or Nanny Cost?

What's the Going Rate, You Ask?

Seems like a lot of talk about money with these early posts - but what goes around comes around, I say. I get asked these questions alot...and to be honest, it's a big deal to all of us parents and child carers...whether we like to talk about it or not.

So here's a quick and dirty guide.

Generally, for casual babysitting just a few hours on an irregular basis, sitters would charge an average of $15-20/hour. If you were looking for more regular nannying help (i.e. 3 full days a week or regular afterschool care) an experienced nanny would charge $20-25/hour.

Most are open to negotiation and it will depend on the number of children they have to care for, or what you'd need them to do on top of babysitting (light cleaning, meals, bathtime etc.) Our advice would be to be open to the candidate first, then look at negotiating an acceptable rate for both of you. But the most important thing is to find the right person for your family...and that can be priceless.

Tip: Offering regular commitment of work - even casual Fri nights every month - might pave the way to lower rates.
