Holiday Rates for Sitters & Nannies - What to Expect
It's that time of year where you're facing parties galore, holiday trips and the iminent New Year's Eve/Day festivities. If you're looking for help, it's useful to know the premium rate that often comes with the holiday season. So, to help you prep yourselves, here's a quick cribsheet on what to expect:
- Christmas/New Year's Eve Night Sitting - You should be ready to pay an additional $5/hour on average for these special dates. I know it may seem alot, but it's only once a year and why not ring it in with a bang?!
- Overnight Sitting - Just because you managed to come home the night before, doesn't mean you want to be awake by 6am the next morning. If you're looking for help the morning after and some fun for the kids, why not get your sitter to stay overnight. Normally, you can expect to pay them their normal hourly rate for time spent caring for your kids and just add circa $40-60 for the overnight period.
- Holiday Travel Nanny - If you're planning a trip away and would love nothing more than to bring your regular/new nanny along to help out, a holiday nanny can be a real comfort to you and alot of fun for the kids. The nanny is technically on duty 24/7 whilst away with your family - so, paying her hourly rate for "care" time with the kids plus all her basic travel, accommodation and meal expenses is fair. If you can plan the days of when she's on duty and agree on a flat rate - that would be the best way to go about it. The general standard would be the hourly rate for "care" time and the overnight top up as well. If the kids are going to be taken care of by you during the night and in the early mornings - you could negotiate a lower rate for the overnight section if that was agreeable with the nanny.
Final tip - get planning early, especially for New Year's Eve! We're getting all our available candidates to let us know of whether they're available so if you need help, you know how to call...and it's not the Ghostbusters! ;)
